1/25/2024 0 Comments Scitech daily![]() The individual nucleotides, basic units of nucleic acids like DNA and RNA, dictate the bonding between complementary sequences. DNA molecules behave in an interesting way. Gang had previously worked with the paper’s lead author, Brookhaven postdoctoral researcher Aaron Michelson, on an experiment using DNA structures to build a robust framework for novel materials. Oleg Gang, pictured behind, and Aaron Michelson use the specialized resources at CFN to measure the surprising strength of this novel material structure. This novel technology has inspired an array of innovative applications-from drug delivery to electronics. Oleg Gang, a materials scientist at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), a DOE Office of Science User Facility at Brookhaven Lab, and a professor at Columbia University, has been leveraging DNA’s unique properties for materials synthesis for years, resulting in numerous discoveries. Their resilience and simplicity have intrigued material scientists and inspired many interesting experiments. The material DNA is made of is known as a polymer, a class of tough, elastic materials that includes plastic and rubber. In living things, deoxyribonucleic acid, more commonly known as DNA, carries biological information that instructs the cells of organisms on how to form, grow, and reproduce. DNA-The Building Blocks for Life and More The results were published in the journal Ce ll R eports Physical Science. Materials that possess both of these qualities are uncommon, and further research could lead to novel engineering and defense applications. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory were able to fabricate a pure form of glass and coat specialized pieces of DNA with it to create a material that was not only stronger than steel, but incredibly lightweight. Scientists at the Columbia University, the University of Connecticut, and the U.S. This is particularly evident in most types of glass, leading to its reputation as a fragile material. Such vulnerabilities can cause them to fracture under pressure. In broader-scale production, and even in natural settings, numerous materials are susceptible to defects and contaminants that can compromise their intricate architecture. Working at the nanoscale provides scientists with a deep understanding and precision in crafting and analyzing materials. (Artist’s concept) Researchers developed a light yet strong material by combining two unexpected ingredients-DNA and glass. This groundbreaking discovery, utilizing the nanoscale structuring of glass and the unique properties of DNA, holds potential for diverse applications in engineering and defense. Researchers have created a novel material by coating DNA with a pure form of glass, resulting in a substance that is lighter and stronger than steel. 1/25/2024 0 Comments Challone forrester biz connect360I wouldn’t say I feel sad that we are concluding this story arc that spanned over a decade because I must think about the next story now… There is no end to my work! I’m genuinely excited to bring the finale of this story arc to our players. You have also confirmed that Endwalker would not be the game’s closing chapter, which was a huge relief to all the FFXIV fans! What is in the cards for what will come next? How do you expect your writing and narrative process to change after the story gets to such a cosmic scale and concludes, and you are finally able to take the next big adventure anywhere?Įverything is still in very rough and preliminary stages, but I do have ideas of where to take the story after Endwalker even for the next few years. However, I am currently occupied with thinking of how to best deliver the first climax to FFXIV through Endwalker and the end of this story arc (laughs). What are some of the main themes you want fans to watch out for as they explore the new expansion and play through Endwalker’s story? When the players finally reach the end of 6.0 what do you want them to feel? You will have to wait until things have settled down some more before I can give you any more answers. 1/25/2024 0 Comments Bluex wowI think of the blues as like a river shaped by the conditions around it, made to be a certain way because of what happens-the lay of the land, the obstacles set in its path. Tough times lived by tough people who somehow found in that hardship the right chords, words, and voice to give a truthful, meaningful accounting of the human spirit under strife. Wall captures blues culture as it genuinely was. When the ride begins, there’s no turning back. Instead of the jail where a tail-wagging dog holds the key to freedom, it’s a succession of dimly-lit, smoke filled shacks selling rotgut whisky where men and women take blowing off steam to the far extreme: gambling, fighting, and screwing to wide open blues music performed by the best of the best. Instead of pirates, it’s blues musicians. Only, instead of Colonial Caribbean, it’s the 1930s South. In addition to Bagger Vance and Wizard of Oz, Fat Man Blues feels like the Disney ride Pirates of the Caribbean. If, here, your mind has jumped to Robert Johnson’s Cross Roads Blues-said to be about trading his soul to the Devil in exchange for the ability to play and sing blues-you’re going to get optimum ROI from Fat Man Blues. It’ll involve what seems like a deal with the devil. He meets a mysterious and somewhat shady character named Fat Man who offers to show him the real blues of the 1930s. Hobo John is a Brit on a mission to seek out the roots of blues, its people and places, its spirit and meaning. The Wizard of Oz but a protagonist named Hobo John, not Dorothy, and the Mississippi Delta instead of a yellow brick road. In Fat Man Blues, the novel by Englishman Richard Wall, the blues also are a pilgrimage, a strange and lifeful dream. ![]() I went with Led Zeppelin-a long-lost CD, playing it loud enough to be heard far across fields all the way out to the road as if baring my soul to the world through a hard edged sound inspired by and even stolen from blues greats such as Muddy Waters, Blind Willie Johnson, Willie Dixon, and others. I floated around and around with a Cuba Libre balanced on my forehead. I was trying to adjust to the place and to myself. I once spent most of a summer having a major mid-life meltdown in a blue rubber pool in a cow pasture in rural South Carolina. 1/25/2024 0 Comments Dendrite structure![]() There are different mechanisms for lipid antigen uptake depending upon the antigen source and its structure such that endogenous lipids are differentially distributed in subcellular compartments and internalized lipids are transported to different endocytotic vesicles. ![]() With concomitant degradation of myelin, oligodendrocytes and axons, along with reactive astrogliosis and activated microglia - meaning that there is no only the problem of demzeliniyation but of hzperactive microglia.Īdditional T-cell subsets play a prominent role in MS immunopathology: Th17 cells, CD8+ effector T cells and CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells. Even if we ask bad questions every now and then, there's nothing wrong with that either. If a question helps you learn, it's not bad. (pH is the concentration of H+ ions)Īnd no worries, your question isn't bad. When it comes to taste, it's actually the concentration of different substances that cause the senses. And certain proteins cause the taste of unami. When there is salt, we feel that it's salty. When there is sugar, we feel that it's sweet. When the pH is high, we feel that it's bitter. When the pH is low, we feel that it's sour. So about taste sensation, the stimuli is actually the chemicals in our mouth. In the same way, the cell that senses the stimuli in any part of the body is the receptor, not the neuron. The neuron is the one that transfers the message (nerve impulse) to the brain. That said, it is not the neuron that senses the taste, but the taste receptor cell. When eating, the taste receptor cells in our taste buds detect concentrations of different chemicals and fire electric signals to sensory neurons, which in turn fire a nerve impulse to the brain. So basically each anatomical structure has different functions to offer. Therefore, for instance the Purkinje cell with its huge dendrical tree acts as an integrator of many different signals. Additionally, a huge dendritic tree means that it has a lot of potential for many many connections to other neurons. Therefore, weak signals will maybe not even arrive at the soma since they decay with time. If the dendrites are long, it takes longer until they reach the soma. So the axon is responsible for the temporal delay of the signal conductance, similarily to the dendrite. If the trunk is long, then it will take longer for your friend to catch the ball, if the trunk is short, you might even be able to give it personally to your friend. Think of the signal as a ball that you want to give your friend you let it fall. A friend of yours is sitting on the grass next to the trees roots (which is the terminals in the neuron analogy). You are sitting in the area where all the branches come together and the trunk starts, this could be the same as the soma of a neuron since all dendrites come together. Different neuron structures change the way the signal is treated and conducted. 1/25/2024 0 Comments Kenken puzzle maker![]() Common KenKen sizes range from 4 x 4 - 9 x 9. ![]() The difficulty in solving this puzzle comes from having to maintain the latin square properties while also satisfying the target numbers of each individual cage. If a cage of size 3 has 6+ (target number: 6, operation: addition) written, then the 3 numbers must add up to 6. ![]() However, instead of having 3x3 boxes, a KenKen puzzle has cages with operations and target numbers. A latin square is a square of size x that has the numbers 1 - x in each column and row exactly once. There is one property of a solved sudoku puzzle: it is a latin square. “A machine doesn’t have heart.Created December 2018 - February 2019 as a Group Project for AP Computer Science A. The Kenerator would never replace him, the sensei assures us. “Do you think that, eventually, computers will be able to make a puzzle that is more similar to your puzzles?” Chris Flaherty, one of the film’s producers, asks Miyamoto. “I feel nothing from this puzzle,” Miyamoto remarks when shown the fruits of the software. The KenKen puzzles in papers like the Times are produced by the Kenerator. In 2016, onstage at Google’s offices in New York, in an ill-fitting suit, Miyamoto described the purpose of his pedagogy in ancient Greek terms: the point is to secure eudaimonia, or, as he put it, the “happy life.” After he put the finishing touches on a KenKen puzzle that he made for the Googlers, Miyamoto kissed it: “My baby, how cute you are.” Most people never see his delicate creations. Miyamoto treats each of his puzzles as a life they are hand molded to tell a story in patterns of math. ![]() “This miracle,” he later said, recalling that day, “is something caused by the force of my problems.” As aftershocks rattled his classroom, his students-deep inside the grid-did not lift their heads. By 2011, in the aftermath of the Great Sendai earthquake, the game’s addictive power was evident. KenKen began to appear in the Times in 2009. Three years later, he published his first book of puzzles in Japan. In 2003, he had an Archimedes moment, and KenKen came into being. Soon he began to craft his first crude puzzles as a way to get third graders to engage with arithmetic. (He recognizes the same plot at work in the lives of others, too.) In 1993, after years of cobbling together teaching jobs, he started his own school. “It’s also about simplicity, an intense focus.” Miyamoto began to see himself as being at the center of his own story, the better to reimagine the disappointments in his life as the first act in a kind of comeback narrative. Miyamoto’s philosophy, of life and KenKen, is “not just about nervousness,” Sullivan told me. “If you think of yourself as just one by seven billion,” he says, “it can make you want to die.” The trick, he discovered, was not to quell his nervous energy but to redirect it, in an almost Thoreauvian way. He felt lonely and overwhelmed at the thought that he was just one number in a sea of billions of interchangeable human beings. Through charming animation, Sullivan reveals how Miyamoto’s feelings about his creations emerged from the story he tells about himself: at fourteen, Miyamoto placed into what he calls “a low-level high school,” got bored, and dropped out. He intends his mathematical challenges to unfold as stories. KenKen puzzles resembling the ones Miyamoto crafts by hand are regularly produced for mass consumption by a piece of software called the Kenerator-but Miyamoto says these computer-generated specimens lack a crucial narrative quality. The puzzle’s distributors refer to it as “sudoku on steroids” in Japanese, “ken” means “wisdom” or “cleverness,” so Miyamoto prefers to translate KenKen, with algebraic panache, as “cleverness squared.” As in sudoku, the player fills a grid with numbers, and none of the digits in a row or column can repeat, but, within the grid, there are also sets of boxes that must amount to a particular total, whether by addition, subtraction, division, or multiplication. The film’s director, Daniel Sullivan, a high-school instructor, first learned of Miyamoto after his wife started competing in KenKen championships. He is also the subject of “Miyamoto and the Machine,” a new documentary about the way the rise of KenKen, an international phenomenon, has been at odds with the meaning its creator hoped to embed in its numerical patterns. “I enjoy nervous air.” The teacher, Tetsuya Miyamoto, is the inventor of KenKen, the puzzle that his students are laboring over. “Nervous air is necessary,” the teacher says. We see the teacher refuse to meet the gaze of one young pupil when he hands back his puzzle, the grid all filled in. All around him, tiny students with pencils in hand struggle over puzzles at their desks. An elementary-school math teacher silently paces his classroom in a pin-striped stockbroker shirt, his mouth full of braces. 1/25/2024 0 Comments Tracks midnight memories![]() Around this time, the rapid population growth on social networks like Myspace and Facebook helped out kids who otherwise would’ve been stuck with the trends and fashions of their own environments learn about what was trendy in other cities and countries with ease. Before this, people were certainly downloading, but “Chasing Cars” is noted for the way its astronomical digital sales revealed the true impact of the internet on the music industry. Snow Patrol’s 2006 song “Chasing Cars” brought them to the forefront of the mainstream in an era of pop otherwise dominated by Rihanna and Pink, and their emergence as an “alternative rock” band coincided with a time when the internet was becoming the final frontier for music. In 2013, you gotta make sure you appeal to the kids whose taste runs deeper, the kids who pride themselves on their knowledge of classic rock and independent labels.Ī perfect example of the band’s new direction is “Something Great,” which was co-written by Snow Patrol lead vocalist Gary Lightbody and frequent Snow Patrol producer Jacknife Lee (who has produced albums for Weezer, R.E.M., Bloc Party and many others). And that’s what works now, because the mainstream uppercrust machinery is no longer strong enough to turn a few cute boys into an international sensation. The One Direction boys are beloved by their fandom for the references they make to more “obscure” bands: they wear Joy Division shirts and I’m pretty sure one of them has a Pink Floyd tattoo. have brought indie-folk-whatever-rock to pop radio and Avicii made a #1 album of electronic dance bangers featuring a bunch of country singers. Listening to songs like “Something Great,” “Story of My Life” and “Through the Dark,” it’s obvious that One Direction is completely aware of what’s poppin’ right now in the Billboard Top 100 Gotye and fun. Instead of the overt drum machine sounds and saccharine harmonies that glued their first hits to the insides of our skulls, they’ve crept into a more alternative-leaning realm of pop. The interesting part is the subtle transformation of One Direction’s music itself. It’s got a bunch of songs with catchy hooks and intense production, sung by dreamy boys with British accents. And that, my friends, is why their new album Midnight Memories is so interesting.Ĭlearly, Midnight Memories is a pop album. This is common knowledge, and bands like One Direction are now specifically engineered to appeal to the type of people who are prone to falling in love with cute, singing boys. In an era in which I can (theoretically!) download this One Direction album for free, like, two weeks before it’s even released, musicians must rely on the sale of their merchandise/show tickets/image/souls to make the millions, and it’s the stans who are spending. That is the goal.Īn awareness of the music industry leads one to assume that amassing a colossal, unconditional-love type of fandom is the objective of creating pop music. I’ve been on the receiving end of a couple of these weird-but-kinda-awesome obsessions myself every time another person tags me in their tattoo of my face or lyrics, I say a silent prayer to the gods of pop music that one day I too will have a Twitter account dedicated to reporting my GPS coordinates. ![]() Another friend introduced me to a Twitter account that constantly posts GPS coordinates of One Direction’s location. One Pink Floyd stan friend of mine peed her pants at a Roger Waters show because she didn’t want to miss anything by going to the bathroom. Many of my friends “stan” (it’s a noun and a verb!) for various pop stars, and it is endlessly amusing. In the song, “Stan” is an unstable superfan who is constantly trying to get Eminem to respond to his letters.) (“Stan” is a name that members of popular fandoms have adopted for themselves, originating from the Eminem song of the same title. Since then, I have realized that fixating on some kind of heartthrob would have been much more fulfilling, and recently I’ve developed a fangirl obsession of my own… I am currently CAPTIVATED by fangirls themselves, whom I will henceforth affectionately refer to as “stans” because fuck gender-exclusive terms. Sadly, my interest in the fangirl lifestyle withered over the course of elementary school, and by the time I started middle school at age ten I had no interest in wasting time on the pursuit of rock stars. (I know what you’re thinking: “A.J.? Really? The one with the weird goatee?” To that, I have no explanation other than my taste in men has always been completely baffling, and remains so to this day.) My first taste of true love hit me around age six when the Backstreet Boys released “Larger than Life.” I spent hopeless hours within earshot of the television, waiting patiently for a glimpse of A.J. In my (relatively) short lifetime of cultural awareness, I’ve witnessed a (relatively) massive evolution of pop music. 1/25/2024 0 Comments Poker stars vr codesPokerstars VR should have very little affect on betting patterns and these tells should continue to be reliable and accessible, but also pay attention to how your opponent makes his bets. Villain bets small with the nuts and larger with bluffs – what a gold mine. The heart and soul of developing reads in online poker. Could the classic online timing tells actually become less reliable in this game where opponents are naturally more on their guard? 2. We might find players slow their timing down to remain more consistent in light of feeling more self-conscious about what they give away. This makes us paranoid and careful not to give too much away. The virtual reality world creates a feeling of being watched. Interestingly, in the realm of Pokerstars VR, the instant check might be more camouflaged. We have attacked players who check quickly, stealing pots from them for over a decade of online poker. If there is nothing to decide upon, there is generally very little equity to protect, value to be got, or interest in the pot. Someone who checks without pondering whether they should bet might just be procedurally checking to the raiser, but in other spots where this is not the case, the timing exhibits a lack of required decision-making. The fast check has historically been a sign of weakness. Let’s explore how this blend of online and live poker affects the most important tells. There are two main types of tell that we may use in Pokerstars VR: online tells and live tells.
